Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association

The MIAA is an association that supports athletic events in 33 sports for 374 public but not private high schools in the U.S. state of Massachusetts. The Michigan Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) is a member of the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS), which determines the standards for most high school athletics and events in the United States. The Massachusetts High School Principals Association (MSSPA) (1942–1978) and the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Council (MIAC) (1950–1978) followed the MIAA, which was established in 1978.

MIAA suspends fall sports season

An announcement was released by the MIAA CEO Council to discuss the upcoming college and sporting seasons and club sports. The emergency action derives from the COVID-19 Public Health Pandemic, the suspension of the NCAA’s Fall National Tournaments, and new guidance from the NCAA Board of Governors on the Resocialization of College Athletics.

MIAA sports events will be postponed until January 1, 2021. The NCAA has given approval for selective tournaments in football, basketball, men’s soccer, and women’s soccer for the season. The conference office has also canceled the MIAA Virtual Football Media Day owing to the MIAA football season being postponed.

“MIAA student-athletes, staff, leaders, and our families have the Association’s highest priority,” said President Steve Scott of Pittsburg State University, chairperson of the MIAA CEO Council. The MIAA is taking these crucial steps today to assist with the NCAA membership criteria and to help more of our campuses properly resolve this public health problem.

Athletically relevant events in all MIAA sports, including games, in-season workouts, and out-of-season workouts, will be conducted this fall because any organization has demonstrated its willingness to comply with the August 11th NCAA Policy Clarifications manual that specifies each division’s guidelines on fall sports (non-competition) activities.

There will be no announcement on the winter sports training timetable until October 1 at the moment. The MIAA CEO Council will track this fluid and changing scenario for college athletics, and make appropriate adjustments to this strategy based on recent NCAA guidelines and restrictions.

The MIAA will keep collaborating together with the NCAA on the NCAA Board of Governors’ directives and the Resocialization of College Sports Guidelines. The Association would uphold the importance of student-athletes, coaches, and administrators’ fitness, education, and well-being.
