Ohio High School Football 2022 Live: The Latest Updates, Scores and Highlights

The football season is just around the corner, and it starts earlier than usual this year. On Saturday, August 3rd, the Ohio High School Football League will kick off with the first of its 32nd season. The action begins at 6:00 p.m. EST when district rivals East Central (Cincinnati) and Anderson (Indianapolis) meet on home turf in their annual rematch. With both teams coming into the contest off two-game losing streaks, anything less than a victory would be a letdown for either squad. Ohio Automatic Qualifier East Central enters the season listed as the second-best team in Class A by ESPN and the leading contender to win state again this year. The Indians do have some big shoes to fill after last year’s departure of quarterback Justin Fields and running back Myles Gaskin, who graduated from EC last spring and signed with Michigan State University in June. Still, head coach Bill Lohse is confident his team can regain its dominance over Anderson once again in 2020 and 2021 if things fall into place early on. “We’re going to have to find our rhythm early on because we lost Justin Fields but we have a great crop of receivers that are very talented and if they can get open we’ll be hard to stop from there on out,” said Lohse following practice on Tuesday evening. The Indians also return running back Lee Millar Jr., who rushed for 1,441 yards and 16 touchdowns

The first game of the season is just over a month away and the hype is building. With both East Central and Anderson looking to get back on track and make a strong statement early on, this game could go a long way toward determining who wins the district and whether EC or Anderson will come out on top when the state finals roll around in December. Two of the state’s top teams that are expected to make a run at another title, EC and Anderson are looking to make a statement at the start of the season. Anderson enters the 2020 campaign with a lot of questions and inexperience at key positions. The Indians have a lot to make up for after losing several key players over the summer, including quarterback Justin Fields and running back Myles Gaskin, who graduated from EC last spring and signed with Michigan State University in June. Still, head coach Bill Lohse is confident his team can regain its dominance over EC once again in 2020 and 2021 if things fall into place early on. “We’re going to have to find our rhythm early on because we lost Justin Fields but we have a great crop of receivers that are very talented and if they can get open we’ll be hard to stop from there on out,” said Lohse following practice on Tuesday evening. On the eve of the season, EC will host an open house for fans and parents to kick off the season and get their first look at the 2020 roster. The open house will take place on Saturday, August 3rd from 2:00-5:00 p.m. at the high school.

The Bottom Line

With two of its biggest rivals falling a game short of playoff football, EC is eager to get back to business after a disappointing 5-6 season in 2019. Anderson has been a top-tier program in the state for decades, but the loss of Fields and Gaskin will be tough to overcome. The Indians have a lot of talent coming back on offense and will look to improve on defense after giving up 35 points in their season-ending loss to Pick Central last year. EC will look to re-establish their dominance over Anderson in 2020 and 2021 if things fall into place early on at the start of the season. Anderson will have to find a way to replace the loss of Fields and Gaskin, and new quarterback Zach Thomas will have to step up in a major way if Anderson hopes to remain competitive in the state.
