League information

The Idaho High School Activities Association currently operates in three divisions: Northwest (1A), Heartland (2A), and Southwest (3A). The 2022 IHSF season will begin with a 15-game regular season, which is followed by a seven-game tournament (all 15 teams) followed by the IHSF State Championship Game. The 2022 IHSF season will also include a school-funded travel team rule that will allow schools to field teams with a minimum of six players. The Idaho High School Activities Association is overseen by a Board of Control comprised of representatives from each participating high school in the state. That board is chaired by state senator John E. Moolenaar.

Future expansion

As of 2018, the Idaho High School Activities Association has a waiting list of more than 200 prospective new schools. To join the action in 2022, those schools will have plenty of time to apply for admission during the 2021-2022 school years. The IHSF also has discussed the possibility of adding a new class of football programs in 2023. However, the IHSF will first have to determine whether it will continue to add new high school football programs in that decade. That discussion will take place during the 2021-2022 school years. The IHSF will also discuss possible expansion in 2023 while considering its 2023 season. If the IHSF decides to expand, it will likely do so in 2024. The 2024 season would be the first year that the new programs would begin play.
