Mater Dei vs. St. John Bosco Scouting Report
Mater Dei is coming off of a 2018 season in which they finished with a 7-4 record, lost to St. John Bosco in the CIF Semi-Finals, and went on to finish as the No. 7 team in California in the Final MaxPreps Football Rankings. Mater Dei’s strength lies in their defense. The Mater Dei defense is anchored by the likes of 3-star defensive end Tayari Venable and 4-star defensive tackle Jordan Johnson. Mater Dei’s offense will likely rely heavily on junior running back Zack Moss, who rushed for over 2,000 yards with 25 touchdowns in 2018. St. John Bosco will enter this game after ending the 2018 season with a 12-2 record, including a win against Mater Dei in the CIF Semifinals. St. John Bosco’s strength lies in their offense. The St. John Bosco offense is led by 3-star quarterback Jalen Green and 4-star wide receiver Jacob Copeland. St. John Bosco’s defense may be a question mark, as the team is replacing a lot of starters from last year’s squad.
Mater Dei Football Going Forward
After winning their first CIF Championship in school history in 2017, many expected Mater Dei to be the team to beat in Southern California football in 2018. The Mustangs exceeded expectations and finished the regular season with a 10-0 record before losing the CIF Championship to St. John Bosco. Mater Dei has a chance to go undefeated once again this season, as the schedule has them playing teams such as Bellflower St. John Bosco, Tustin St. Joseph, Mission Viejo Santa Margarita, and Orange Lutheran as their toughest opponents.
St. John Bosco Football Going Forward
St. John Bosco lost in the CIF Championship game to Mater Dei in 2018 in a close game, 34-27. The Braves have a chance to go undefeated once again this season, as their toughest opponents appear to be Mater Dei, Orange Lutheran, Santa Margarita, and Corona Centennial. Like Mater Dei, the Braves will be replacing a lot of starters from last year’s team, but with the amount of talent they have coming back, many expect St. John Bosco to win their third CIF Championship in team history in 2019.
